Professional staff development in academic librariesLibrary Association University, College and Research Section Professional staff development is discussed in relation to the literature of 1975-82 and to current practice in two academic libraries. An outline of background factors is followed by a discussion of the drawbacks. benefits and current state of the art. Some indication is given of possible future trends. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are presented. Throughout. staff development is taken to exclude induction and on-the-job training.
